Yes, have tried turning with pliers and a screwdriver but not helping. The door does open into the room.diystarter7 said:Hi
Do you know how the eltrics work ie the upstairs plugs are on a sperate ciruit and if the fuse box is marked accordingly, turn off the upstairs plugs. If you have boiler upstairs that may tun off as well. Then you can rest
Re door, IMO, the latch may not be fully opening - have you tried a large screw driver or the the square bit and try to turn it more than the handle allows, hold the square rod with piliers and do this, leave the handle off - i am guessing door opens into the bedroom?

I don't suppose by any chance the bedroom window is ajar/able to be opened from the outside? If so, get up on a pair of ladders, in through the window then you can remove the hinges and sort it out. It's a long shot, I know, but just a thought.

Yes thank you, I have turned off the upstairs sockets as per your post. Thank yo. I have put the spindle back in place in the hole and turned it as far as it will go with a pair of pliers but it only goes so far and does not release the catch.diystarter7 said:

Thanks, that is odd. Do you feel, see the latch going back. IMO, the last 1 or 2mm is still protruding and stopping the door from opening.turnitround said:

If it does turn the catch somewhat give the door a jar with your shoulder it just might burst openturnitround said:

The door opens inwards, I think the curved part is facing the outside of the door but not certain of that. I have taken an identical handle off one of the other bedroom doors but that didnt help either, it still does not open the catch. As I said, when I couldnt open the door I took the handle off and there was a small piece of metal looked as if it had snapped off inside.cymruchris said:Additionally do you have any other doors that have the same setup that you can open? Which way around is the bit that sticks out?Is the curved bit towards you or away from you? Does the door open inwards or outwards towards you from where you're standing?

I disagree as it will damage the frame but a slight nudge may helpMikeJXE said:
