This morning I was working in the spare bedroom and came downstairs to answer the door. When I went back upstairs I couldn't reopen the bedroom door. The handle was turning but nothing happening.

i have removed the handle and there is was small broken bit of metal loose inside the hole. However, I still cant get the door to open. Ive tried turning the metal rod inside with pliers but that does not help at all. The hinges are on the other side of the door.

Problem is that my iron is on in the room I cane get into and if I have to end up breaking down the door I will have a lot of damage. Can anyone suggest a way to get the door open without having to do something so drastic?
Pic of the type of handle  in case it helps-
Thank you in advance.

Can you post a photograph of the door frame? If you're majorly concerned about the iron - turn off your electric while working a way into the room.

Thanks for replying.  Yes thats what I mean, as that will slot into place I thought that if I turned it with pliers it may open the catch but it did nothing.
I cant see a way I can possibly get into the room without breaking the door down which I dont want to do.

    Hi

Do you know how the eltrics work ie the upstairs plugs are on a sperate ciruit and if the fuse box is marked accordingly, turn off the upstairs plugs. If you have boiler upstairs that may tun off as well. Then you can rest

Re door, IMO, the latch may not be fully opening - have you tried a large screw driver or the the square bit and try to turn it more than the handle allows, hold the square rod with piliers and do this, leave the handle off - i am guessing door opens into the bedroom?

Can you slip the catch on the door with a credit card or something similar.

Yes, have tried turning with pliers and a screwdriver but not helping. The door does open into the room.

Additionally do you have any other doors that have the same setup that you can open? Which way around is the bit that sticks out?

Is the curved bit towards you or away from you? Does the door open inwards or outwards towards you from where you're standing?

Unfortunatly not. There is no way to get near the catch because of the way the door is set in.
