Can I just recommend this website. I am just finishing off this quilt along (although obviously well behind the original!) and it is fabulous. She has many other quilt alongs and offers step by step instructions. I had never sewed with a machine before I started trying to make up squares according to her instructions and I am now at the stage where I need to (find my 2.25" square) finish my binding and then sandwich the whole shebang.

I have deiced to do this as my first project
katiedid.squarespace.com/katie-did-journal/2009/1/27/quilt-how-to.html
think I might treat myself and do it in silk as a thrown for the sofa - just going to do a it cot bed size as a 'lap quilt'. Will have to wait a while to buy the fabric though
Kaz - I was reading the tutorial on binding on that site and have it book marked - looks like agreat resource. Can we see picks of yoru quilt?
Sanity - I think a jelly roll is a roll of narrow strips of fabric - they sell them labled as jelly rolls in my local fabric shop so I guess jelly roll quilts are patchworks using strips. I could be totally wrong though....People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Hi, Jelly rolls are fabrics that have been cut into 40 strips measuring 2.5 by 44 inches.

Hi All
My mum is thinking about taking up quilting and I was looking to get her a beginner's intro book.
She's v crafty and can sew and knit, but can easily get discouraged when learning things. Once she picks things up, she's a -perfectionist and can improvise with the best of them.
Any suggestions for starting up that would have a couple of quick wins?
Thanks

The Book People have a book called Quilting Step by Step. It's only £4.99. I received mine yesterday and it seems to be a very good book. (Only had a quick look so far)0

Also on the Book people The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking by Jane Brockett. My friend is an avid quilter and she always recommends this author . It is £6.99 and had a good review.£180.00 in 'sistercas'fund

Apologies if this is on the wrong board but I couldn't see a suitable alternative!
I've just started quilting - well actually I haven't yet started, I'm doing a college course that involves some quilting and have been reading up on different patterns and techniques.
So what I'm after is.........some recommendations for good forums (fora?) for quilters, useful websites for help, free and easy patterns for some foundation quilting etc etc
I hope that someone can point me in the right direction
Thank you

Neither of these blogs are mine.
Frugal Queen's blog is very handy for quilting tips and links to other quilters

And Vintage Sheet Addict
http://vintagesheetaddict.blogspot.co.uk/
Hope that helps. Both blogs are reusing textiles most of the time rather than buying new which may save you a few quid here and there!
Also, there are quilters groups around the country so it may be worth a quick search. Or asking your tutor.‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.
