Have a look in the charity shops for an old woollen blanket. You can boil wash to shrink and felt it a bit, which makes it super cosy, or use as it is for batting.

And for the OP, there are squillions of websites/blogs with quilting techniques, patterns and so on, just google 'basic quilt tutorials' to start with. Also, may I recommend your local library? I have a large stash of my own quilting books, but the library always has something new or different. On ours you can even look on their website catalog, and order to your local branch any that are of interest. My personal favourite for many reasons is one called 'Quilts, quilts, quilts, the complete guide to quiltmaking' by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes. I was taught patchwork and quilting when I went to school in the USofA, and my teacher used this book for her lessons. It gives an excellent overall view of the subject, has detailed techniques, beautiful photos, patterns and most useful, sizing/qty guides for all different sizes of quilt. HTH and enjoy yourself!

Ps Don't buy that magazine, it is a total rip off!

one of the brownies from my pack had for our pyjama party last night a cushion that popped out into a quilt, ie a pocket sewn onto the home made quilt that quilt was folded into,
i bought some wadding some time ago to make my daughter a quilt for camping, and ive a 2 gingham quilt covers from her single bed and her curtains ( she has a double now and had the double quilt and curtains from woolworths online for £14 for quilt cover and curtains)
the quilt cover should be easy enough to just pop wadding in and sew on her name or something, all ideas welcome as not very inspired so far!!!!
what can i do with the curtains?
and how do i do the pocket???
do i draw on the fabric and follow the pencil lines for her name or what do people recomend as id like her to have this for years and add warm tho her bed next winter i thought about using an old fleece in it to as found a few but they have marks so ideal to pop in the quilt as hidden and will add extra layers for camping xxx
ps there 2 pillow cases i can use too as were bogof years ago x

I was interested in doing the same thing and came across this site http://www.cherrymenlove.com/crafts-how-tos/2010/03/how-to-make-a-patchwork-quilt.html, excellent site for more than just quilt making!

thank you, i intended just using thequilt cover as it is, but not im going to attempt my first quilt!
Ive sewn the fleece to the wadding so it retains its shape and gives extra warm this morning and look for ward to cutting the curtains up to make the quilt now xxx
