Which is best new phone option when I'd like to stay on SIM-only? Or go contract?

I became out of contract on my Iphone deal with EE a few years ago, and following MSE advice, switched to SIM-only, saving lots of money. All good. But my iPhone is now on its last legs, cracked, battery doesn't charge etc, and I really need a new phone.
I'd rather not get tied into a contract again but likewise spending £££ on a new iphone isn't appealing either. What's the best ie. cheapest route to take?

Can you take it to a local 'phone shop' and get a new screen and battery?

Giffgaff do reconditioned preloved phones - have had mine for several years now and had no issues. If you do happen to get a dud (as I did initially) they will sort it quickly and without drama.Debt Free Wannabe by 1 December 2027

It's a big question. Look at your usage and compare tariffs, check coverage across the networks, then look at what you need from a handset. Also check the small print on bundles as many will have above inflation price rises. Worth checking amazon warehouse and refurbished offers.0

I have thought of a reconditioned phone, so thanks for the GiffGaff recommendation. What about generally, if I was thinking of a new phone? What are the options if I want to stay with my SIM card. ie is the price for all new phones just roughly the same no matter if I go with EE, who I'm with, or anyone else? Is there any scheme I can become part of because I've been an EE customer for so long?I know I'd like to step up to one of the most recent iPhones, so it's not the choice of phone that's the question.0

As I understand it the days of subsidised locked phones are over, so basically networks will look at long contracts with interest free payments tied to airtime deals. Some will automatically shift to sim only once the handset is paid off.The big difference is likely to be in allowances and prices for data.2

Apple do 0% finance on their phones if you want to do it as a monthly payment. This includes their refurbished phones.2

I bought an "excellent" refurbished iphone from Giffgaff last week. Was immaculate looking but battery health was 88% so sent it back and was refunded within two days.Bought the same model on Ebay. There was a 15% off code and the phone was cheaper anyway. Again not a mark on the phone at battery at 93% so have kept it.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid2
