I found that debt collection letters sent back to sender were just ignored.  I assumed this was because some debtors were returning mail in the hopes that they would stop being sent.  Some companies though are a total pain.  I had my mothers mail forwarded to me & the junk mail I even returned to sender.  One company was still sending over a year later.  So being a nice person & having free calls, I rang them & suggested they stop.  They said no & wanted to see the POA, I mean for junk mail!  I just told them to keep wasting their money on postage as it wasn't my problem but it was going straight in the bin.
I still get Christmas cards addressed to an owner from over 30 years ago, my neighbours who know them have even told them the address has changed, people can be odd.

Honestly at that point I'd probably get poundland envelopes, put the original into said envelope, and send it back to them unstamped.

I'd also write RTS on the original envelope / lettrr

That way, you never get it sent back to you hopefully and if they have to pay for postage back to them, then they'd hopefully cut down

Unless there is a return address labelled on the envelope RM destroy the mail anyway. If there isn't an address on the back of the envelope save your energy and just bin it.

When this happened to me with a tenant i had to evict i opened all the mail.
If it was companies chasing money i just rang them up and explained what had happened and gave them the address of the ex-tenants mother so at least they had somewhere they could look for the tenant

This happened to us when the people we bought from had obviously stacked up a load of debt; threatening letters, bailiffs, etc

On one occasion, I rang the debt management company, trying to be helpful (and to avoid goons on my doorstep).

They were so offensive;presumably as they were used to being nasty and intimidating, rather than human and courteous?  They said I was breaking the law by opening a former owner/occupant's mail! So I suggested they go forth and procreate and just binned the lot!  It doesn't always pay to be a good person?

I'm still getting  some post from the previous owner. My system is all the holiday brochures and catalogues etc are now being binned, having originally been marked RTS and sent back. The proper stuff - gas bill, council, mobile phone - is still being marked RTS but I'm only giving that a wee while longer.

Makes me wonder how their systems work. Both British Gas and the council know she's not here and that we are. We had to open an account with BG as our deemed supplier when we moved in so they have our names/bank details etc. Same with the council. I registered as soon as we moved in cos I had to sign up for bin collections and buy 3 new bins. So why can't they marry up those two facts?!

Anyway that's what I do. Dross goes straight in the bin, proper stuff RTS, but when we've been here a year then it's all going in the bin.
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

To stop marketing, I think you can register them at the mps
