I'd forgotten all about unschooling. Yes that was what was recommended on that group I mentioned previously if you were going to take child from formal education to home education.

When my child was having mental health problems recently the doctor sent us to the charity Action For Children.  there may be some help for you there?

Different local authorities have different offerings. My DD had medical problems meaning she was missing more school than she was attending. School initially were totally unsupportive but we pushed and pushed for help as she couldn’t write or walk very far. It took months but eventually they offered us online schooling run by the local authority. It was a god send, she was able to do the core subjects for the remainder of y10 and all of y11 only attended school for the exams. Most of the other students using the program were for mental health reasons. For whatever reason schools seem reluctant to offer anything until you really push. We had told them we would be writing to the governors to get them to actually offer support so this might be a good idea.
    Good luck

I've recently come across this advocacy business: https://www.facebook.com/SunshineSupportUK

    They seem legit.

My niece has been through very hard times in mainstream education before obtaining an EHCP (took over 2 years in which time she received little to no education). It is really, really hard. Wishing you well OP x

I was homeschooled and it sucks. Don’t do it. You don’t socialize, you stay in the house all day, it’s boring and you make no friends.

    Only if it's done badly.

My eldest son's idea of heaven!
He hated socialising, hated outside and had no interest in friends. He's 37 now and hasn't changed. Has a brilliant job which allows him to work at home so I doubt he'll ever change.

If it was the best option more people would do it.

I have to say that homeschooling was the best thing I ever did for my daughter. She did one day at secondary school and that was it.

I took her out because of anxiety. She took charge of what she wanted to learn, taught herself Japanese. GCSE's were done at college. She has just finished her first year at university too. (Had a bit of a gap between college and university due to illness and recovery).

I have absolutely no regrets and neither does she, I did find the schools rather lacking in support but camhs were fabulous.

I don't know what groups are around now as it's been more than 10 years since. I do hope you find a way forward. Even if it's just unenrolling from school for a few weeks/months just to take some of the stress off.

It isn't the best option for everyone - just as school isn't the best option for every child.
If both parents need to work full-time or are carers for other people, if they aren't confident in their ability to teach a range of subjects or just plain don't want to.
For some children and some families, it is the best option.
