Hi

I noticed today on way home from work that my 15 month old docs marten boots are cracking and there's soon to be a hole in them on the top..

I wear them for work so 5 days a week least 10 hours of the day for say ,50 weeks of the year.

Would you say that this is just normal wear and tear and suck it up and buy a new pair.

I bought these docs as I needed to replace a cheap pair of Chelsea boots from Asda that collapsed at the heel.

Should I complain or just suck it up.

That's a fair amount of use. No harm in asking and see what they say. Remember you catch more flies with honey then you do vinegar, so wouldn't jump in with the words complaint. If you get no joy, the onus will be on you to prove that they are faulty due to a defect that was present at purchase but has only just manifested itself. This would be via a report. If it's in your favour you will get the cost of the report back plus a remedy of repair, replace refund. The retailers gets to choose the most cost effective remedy out of those three. If it's a refund, they can deduct an amount for the 15 months use you've already had.

How do you treat them?  Do you dry them when they are wet?  Brush the dirt from them?  I know when I worked with civil construction companies we did buy employees new safety boots every year.

Amount of time worn will not have as much effect as just what sort of use they get. So sat at a desk, is going to be better than walking around all day.

But cleaning & feeding always helps.👍

Are they the standard 1460 boot?

Could the almost-hole be caused by something at work e.g. rubbing under a piece of machinery? Or by your toe?
If your boots are wet, how do you dry them. Naturally or near a radiator?

Have you polished them at all?

Most DMs I've bought from the website have a card that tells you how to look after them.

This link tells you how to use DM dubbin wax and DM Wonder Balsam.

If they are the standard 1460 and worn in wet weather or standing/moving a lot (not just for desk work) then five days a week for 15 months seems fair.

Dr Marten used to do safety boots (with steel toecaps), I don't know if they still do.
If you are working in an industrial environment, maybe those would be better.

Did you wear your Asda chelsea boots in the same way?
    How long did they last?
