    Hi OP

I'm surprised no one has asked this yet. The wall with these things, is this an outside wall and if so are there air vents there?

They do look like plasterboard, probably stuck on with no more nails or similar.

Covering them depends really if the holes behind are standard socket sized or bigger. It may be better to remove the horrible wallpaper, fill the holes flush then repaint
What do you mean, horrible wallpaper?!

I think you're right, they do look like plasterboard - here's a close up of how they are attached to the wall (and the gorgeous wallpaper):

What would you suggest for removing them with minimal damage/ doing it neatly?
They're probably only attached to the lovely wallpaper.  I bet you could slide even a wallpaper scraper in the back there and twist it off.

run a sharp knife round between 'plasterboard' and backing, you may be able to gradually get in further until able to remove.
If not then after the knife run use a scraper to poke in, starting at a corner.

    FD77, I don't think you've answered whether it's an outdoor wall?

Anyhoo, as someone else mentioned, if you have no intention of using a gas fire, you may wish to have that supply pipe removed, perhaps when your boiler has its next service/ repair/replacement. I find them a bit 'scary', as well as being an eyesore, and they detract from the lovely embossed paper.

Two layers of plasterboard, tobesuretobesure?! Lawdie. It looks like a solvent 'no nails' type of adhesive, so I'd suggest it's sadly unlikely to come off cleanly. If the normal scraper method clearly ain't working without wrecking the paper (did I mention how lovely it is?), an alternative could be to gently tap in the scraper at a completely flat level a few mm out from the wall - start at one corner and slice through that bottom p'board layer. The plaster layer in the bottom p'board should break or even split, leaving behind a rough thin layer of plaster and one layer of paper, still glued to the wall. Scrape off as much of the plaster as possible to expose this paper, and then wet it repeatedly until you can rub or scrape it away. IF the glue used is also water-based, then you could be in luck - it might come away cleanly.

    Chances look low, tho'

    I'm in!
I had a plastic tray stuck to the hall wall of my new place. Nope, no idea why.
I gently used a Stanley knife to start, then sawed with a bread knife (I eat sliced bread now) and between the two got it off with hardly a mark.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
