Gas disconnection rip off

I am all electric now and want to avoid the monthly standing order.
Has anyone in the South East had any success in getting gas removed at a reasonable cost ? Octopus told me to get my network operator SGN to cap off the gas before they will take the meter away.
SGN ( owned by the Toronto Teachers Pension Board ) want £1300 - £3500 to remove entire main from my property. They don't have a capping off option.
This is real monopoly abuse as many other gas networks will do for £95-£200. What have others paid for their disconnections?
Thanks

Ask your supplier if they'll refund the standing charge if you don't use any gas. I've heard of some doing so if it's a longer term arrangement. You'll then still have the meter there should you decide to use gas in the future, or sell the property.

Octopus was ‘capping off’ the supply after removing the meter for free. Clearly, the original gas connection remains in place. Having a meter in situ usually incurs a standing charge even if no gas is used.0
