Split 1 bedroom into 2 bedrooms

Hi all,

I recently got divorced and had to downsize to a 2 bed flat. I gave my teenage son his own bedroom and I now share with my daughter.
I am almost 50 and I need my own space! Is it possible to split this room in 2 (see attached picture)? And how could I best maximise the space? I have circled the space available. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Difficult to see how it could be effectively divided as there is only one window.  Also, creating a small vestibule for an additional doorway if you did divide it would make one room very small indeed.  A partition running from the 'window wall' would also leave 2 rooms each little more than 5 feet wide.

Looking at Pinterest for shared bedroom privacy ideas might be a good idea for that room.  It's a bit of a struggle to know what phrases to use to search on, but if these beds were enclosed at the end and perhaps a curtain across, there would be some privacy for both and a bit of space gained.  And no need for creating even more 'hallway' space.

In a space like you have, you need to think vertically!

Is there any option at all to put in another window?  What you don't want to do is have someone sleeping in a cupboard behind a door with no window.  Dangerous in a fire, hence better to work for privacy in one room.

if you were lucky enough to have high ceilings.

  • You might want to think about screens of some sort to give some privacy, because it would be very difficult to turn that room into two individual rooms.
  • Could you section off some of the living area and use a sofa bed? Not at all ideal, but at least there are 2 windows to play with.

So someone sleeps in the kitchen with the cooking smells?
It's something like 6/7ft x 12. Thats tiny wide. But what I did when I couldn't visualise a small space was cut and stick paper sheets then, in this case any dressing table and wardrobe and place it on the floor.
It's a pain to start with but also an eye opener and the sheets can be moved around more easily than furniture.
In this case take photos each time to remind you.

Whichever you do don't make it permanent as it would never sell. But for you in desperation a temporary measure.

  • @twopenny, not if a dividing wall is put up. It's not a big space, but big enough (I think) for a cabin style single bed for a teen. Problem is then they won't have a family space.

    Hi All,

Thank you all for you input on my project.

As we plan to stay in the flat for 6 years I am still thinking about splitting the larger bedroom in 2. Based upon your input I got a quote for the changes and it will cost £3,400. It is massively over my budget but do you think the quote is reasonable? I have attached a photo which shows the extra lighting via windows that open and shut - so the second room will get natural light and air.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks.

The changes will mean I finally get the double bedroom, my daughter will have a high sleeper to save floor space and my son will have a large single bedroom.
