All of my local Aldi's now have a notice at the entrance that says something along the lines of "Please ensure that all of your items are placed on the checkout belt, that your bags are empty and your trolley is empty". Whilst my bags weren't obviously checked, when I placed one in the trolley the checkout operator was looking into it. She didn't ask to see inside but I don't think it would have bothered me if she had.

Perhaps those who object should leave their bags in their cars (if they go by car) and waste time by handling their items more?

It's interesting you say that, the supermarkets are far away from us so it's, sadly, a day out to stock up for the next 3 weeks and we go in at least 3 supermarkets.

No bags in the shops, the stuff is loaded on the belt in the order it goes in the trolley (heavy first, etc) and we have several oversized fabric bags in the boot, one for soft stuff like bread, one for fruit and veg, one for cleaning products, etc.

This means after the trip to each shop the same items are in the same bags, there's a lot less to bags to carry into the house (it's easier to haul 5 large bags than 15 smaller ones) and the pantry bag goes by the pantry cupboard, fridge bag by the fridge, etc, meaning it's much quicker to decant everything into it's space.

No Aldi here but in Lidl the staff are clearly told to scan the stuff at super human speed and the area to put it afterwards is very small (which I'm sure is intentional to encourage you to get on with it), the stuff is in the trolley faster than they scan it, the people who stand there for ages trying to puzzle their shopping in to bags really bug me.
