As an example I often buy a steak from Asda, I use the self service and when I leave the till area it on occasion sets off the alarm due to the security tag not deactivating. I then has to ask them to remove the tag. The person will scrutinise the receipt before they do it but I don't really take that personally even though technically they are accusing me of stealing it!

CRISPIANNE3 said:We went to a retail park on Saturday to do our usual weekly shop at Aldi. I arrived at the checkout with three bags for life and were placed on top of the shopping. They were completely flat as they had nothing in that at that point. The checkout operator said he wanted to search the bags because they has a shop lifter last week who tried to get away with £300 worth of shopping before running off. So because of that incident I assume all shoppers are now treated as shop lifters.
I have phoned Aldi and they advice this is not their policy and are going to. investigate and promised to call me back. I will update when I here back.

I regularly get asked this in Aldi
I'm not a shoplifter so I'm not bothered in the slightest being asked to help them stop thefts from the store and keep prices downEx forum ambassador

I was scanned at an airport. How very dare they imply I'm carrying drugs and a Sturmgewehr!
Slightly serious now, not everything on the Aldi shelf is bulky. I imagine packs of smoked salmon could be squirreled
away.
Search my bags? Sure, not a worry. Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!3 -
Some store carry out random bag checks, doesn't mean they are accusing anyone of anything just letting it be known it is pro active in looking for shoplifters and using it as a deterrent.2

Also you don't get a direct dial number to a store so you would of spoken to a call centre so saying it isn't company policy doesn't mean certain stores wont have a local policy in place like this.2

I don't see the issue with this at all. However there is no way a shoftlifter got £300 Aldi stuff in bags that appeared flat.
Seems daft to need to look in flat bags. When the bags are open and in the trolley ready to be packed I totally agree why shouldn't they check nothing has been put in them and not the conveyor belt. Very easy to items in and not be seen with their till layouts if someone was so inclinded to do so.
Probably the only disadvantage of reusable bags from the supermarkets point of view0 -

This means the staff have to observe you in an intentional act - removing tags, hiding it, looking furtively around before shoving it up a jumper etc.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years.
