Trimming doors to go over new carpets
Comments

Had our dining room carpet changed last summer - small local carpet company.
Door needing trimming - fitter said he could do it for extra £15. Made a good job of it as well.0 -
Had this very issue when was working on my daughters flat, went from very thin laminated floor boards to a ridiculously plush carpet and had to take just over an inch off every door. As the doors in question were all solid wood and weighed a ton the carpet people wouldn't touch it.
If you end up doing it yourself my experience is that that after failing miserably with a hand planer I got myself a new sharp blade for my circular saw and managed to do a fairly decent job of it. Just needed someone to help manoeuvre the doors onto a workbench and lots of checking of the measurements.

The recent flooring company invoice has a note on it that trimming of doors isn't included but that if you want it they can arrange.

The carpet company have got back to me and quoted for trimming the doors. OH could do it, but time is of the essence and we have a million things to do already. The fitters still have the house key so they can do it without us having to be there. If I ever have carpets fitted again I will remember to ask for door trimming to be included in the quote.0

Whenever i've had new carpets the fitters would indeed trim the bottom of the door, no extra charges applied.0

Both of the last 2 times I had new carpets fitted (downstairs and upstairs separately) a door or 2 needed to be trimmed. The carpets were bought from different stores using their fitters - in both cases the fitter trimmed the door (took about 15 minutes). I think it cost about £30 per door.0

Additional cost but I think it was 20per door.
I have planed door in the past, as had a track saw and a suitable table.“Don't raise your voice, improve your argument." - Desmond Tutu

The place I work has just bought a couple of door trimming saws - allow you to trim the doors without taking them off the hinges. They've got a job coming up with 400 doors to do so it was cheaper than paying joiners to do it.0
