Trimming doors to go over new carpets

Does the price of fitting carpets normally include trimming doors to the right height if the carpet is thicker than the previous one?
It didn't occur to me to ask when I accepted the original quote and I need to ring the company today to ask about it.
It's in an empty property so we haven't been there to oversee the job.
Thanks

I have never come across a carpet fitter(s) who trim doors; always found it best to take doors off before they arrive and plan to do any trimming yourself.

    Joiners job to trim doors.

  • Hi,
maybe rising door hinges would give enough clearance.
  • Thanks for the replies. Saves me an argument with the carpet company
It would have been helpful if they had told us this before hand though. My elderly parents are moving in in a few days and we've got enough to sort out as it is. Hey ho.

My guess is that the carpet company would never do this so there is no reason for them to warn customers.
  • It's quite a lot of work as they need to take the doors off the hinges, trim them and rehang. You will need to get a carpenter to do this for you.
  • Definitly one for Carpenters, never known a carpet store that will adjust doors (unless they are fitting wooden floor in which case some times they do)

It depends on the company. I know a fitter who used a special trimming saw that cuts them insitu. You need to check first.
  • Last year I had a carpet company measure a room for a new carpet. They were very clear from the start that the fitter would not cut the doors

Whenever I've had new carpets the quote or paperwork has mentioned that there is an extra charge for trimming doors.  I am not sure if the carpet fitter would do this or whether they would get someone else in, but the price I paid didn't include it, and fortunately I never needed it.
