Need a 4g/5g tablet, any recommendations?

Hi, mother-in-law needs a new tablet, but it has to have a data SIM connection as she doesn't have a broadband connection at home. Her old one only has 2gb storage, and a large chunk of that is taken up with system files. It's not that she needs tons of space, but due to its age it's just running so slow now and keeps telling her to delete things, despite only having 2 or 3 of her own apps on. I've looked through and cleared cache etc, but it's nowhere near enough.

So, she needs a small tablet, around 8 inches with a mobile data connection. I'm not sure of her budget, but it won't be huge. Maybe £100 or so? Any ideas please?

Does she have a mobile phone with 4G/5G that she could use as a data hotspot?

Wouldn't solve the problem I don't think as the tablet is about 5 years old. Great suggestion though and I will see if there is a possibility as I'm unsure of her current one.

Another good suggestion but she really isn't techie enough to sort this whenever she needs it. Her current contract is only for minimal data on her phone.

You will struggle to get a make you have heard of for £100.

Blackview do one for about £120, I've heard of them, but are they any good?

Otherwise, bash 4g tablet into eBay and see what turns up, plenty of samsungs, but they had a reputation for having a cripple timer built in that made them run at a crawl when samsung felt it was time that you upgraded- I have a tab 7" that did this, a complete re-install and it still goes slower than a ZX81.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The £100 isn't likely accurate, just a stab in the dark from me. Maybe she could stretch to more. From the searches I've done, there doesn't appear to be a lot of choice of 4g tablets.

Little bit more than £100, but look on Amazon at Huawei 4g tablets.

  • Thank you everyone, appreciate it. Will tell her about the refurb and the hauwei's. Hopefully she will decide on one of those.
  • I did wonder about if a mobile broadband router would be any good for her so she could still use her tablet at home and her choices wouldn't be so limited?
