Who paid the grant money to the supplier ?

Was the money paid to you to pay to them or  did they apply to the council for a direct payment to them.
  • I just want what I was entitled to in the first place , a working stairlift not money.  I am sure I signed nothing
other than the grant application papers.  There are plenty of stairlifts that can be fitted with no alterations to the house. The stairlift provided does not work because all the original pre and post quote surveys did not take the existing pipes into consideration.
I have today discovered that the local Council are not willing to help in any way but they do state that no money has changed hands and will not until I have ,signed off, the installation.
I have already rejected the stairlift as not fit for purpose and having allowed Prism Medical to attempt a repair to the stairlift as required requested them to uninstall and take away. I have been ignored. So where to from here I cannot prove I did not sign a contract so this may mean I cannot reject the staircase.
  • I think that you need to find out who your supplier has the contract with.  Is it with you or is it with the council?

I think you need to review all the paperwork you have, and in particular you need to check again the terms of the disability grant that you got from the council.

If I were you I would contact the council again and ask them to explain to you exactly how this scheme is meant to work, and how they can decide who the supplier is, but then wash their hands of it when the supplier they have selected proves unsuitable.

Have you contacted your local councillor?  You should do so ASAP.

I'd also be tempted to contact the local press.  (Or one of the c"consumer champions" in the national press referred to earlier by another poster.

Is this the supplier?  They don't seem to do stairlifts?  Home - Prism Medical UK, moving, handling and bathing solutions

Do you have the grant papers to hand - do they outline any T&Cs with respect to the lift itself? Or with respect to who has the contract with the supplier?

I think the fact that no money has changed hands probably is why the Council aren't that bothered about chasing it up. But this doesnt help you of course.

How did you initiate the purchase/work? Did you contact the supplier asking for a new stairlift and then separately seek council funding? Or did you approach the council saying 'i need a new stairlift' and then they sent you the grant paperwork etc and introduced the supplier?

Do you have any kind of social worker or similar that you are in contact with?

It certainly seems to be a tricky one and sorry for the situation they've put you in.

I’m sorry to hear of your problems.  Do you rent the property from the council/housing association or a private landlord?  If the former would it be possible to get a bungalow from them?  I know this could take a while but it would be a good long term solution.
