Apologies if I've missed it but have you actually taken delivery yet?  If not, can't you simply refuse delivery?
They don't tend to use couriers but regular postal service and so for the UK leg its Royal Mail and not the same return protocol. Refusing delivery just means they languish in a RM delivery office for X months before being disposed off in the same way as all other undeliverable items and the OP cannot prove they returned them for any form of chargeback (the only likely successful mechanism) nor have the product to sell.

As mentioned above, for an item that was circa £5 in the UK inc P&P I managed to get 10x the quantity and international postage for less.

    Hello,

So I bought an item from a Chinese website (I didn't know it was Chinese when I purchased the item) and after three weeks of it not being posted to me, I contacted them to complain. I pointed out time is critical and I needed them to post the item. Eventually we agreed upon a date - if my item had not been posted by that time, then I wanted a full refund. At this point it had been more than 30 days since I purchased the item. This new date we had agreed upon passed and the company did nothing. I requested a full refund. Eventually the company responded to say thay had now dispatched the item and would only issue a refund if I posted the item back to them.

As I requested the refund before they dispached the item and have this written in the email correspondence with the company, do I need to return the item in order to get my refund? My worry is, the cost of returning the item may be more than the cost of the item itself. I had already agreed with the company in correspondence that I wanted a full refund if they had not dispatched the item by a new calendar date, which then expired. I will happily return the item, but not if I have to pay for the return postage costs. What are my rights?
Your rights in this case are basically nothing. You ordered something and you got what you ordered. You can argue until you're blue in the face with the Chinese supplier but if they arent willing to refund you there ain't much you can do.

    Not true!

There were no consumer rights in Mao's day because under his brand of communism there were no consumers. If you needed anything it was provided for you by your collective.  Since then Chinese consumer law has come on in leaps and bounds and consumers now have more rights than us in the UK. For example short-changed Chinese consumers can often claim punitive damages whereas we are limited to whatever we paid.

Unfortunately though claiming won't be easy or cheap for you  :/

We refused delivery of a package from Chine duw to delayed delivery. We  were there when the postmqn delivered and told him we were refusing delivery.

When no refund was forthcoming we contacted Paypal, who confirmed the  order showed 'refused delivery' and refunded  us.

Regardless of what the law is, if exercising your rights is prohibitively impractical or expensive then your rights are basically nothing.
