Fee free ATMs in Portugal

Options
Any advice regarding which ATM I should used in Portugal for fee free cash withdrawal with Halifax clarity credit card. TIA.

Comments

  • The ATM scenario in Portugal appears to be quite different from that of neighbouring Spain for fee free deals.
Multibanco machines get a mention - but only if you have an accepted "user riendly" card.
Not sure if Halifax Clarity comes into this category or not.

Just back from a long weekend in Lisbon and hardly used any cash at all. Almost everywhere was contactless.  Nice to come back from a trip without a pocketful of euro coins.

I used Multibanco ATMs and there was no charge, they are everywhere, I think they're a network shared by various banks. Just be sure to decline DCC, the rate was terrible and it asks twice (ie choose the "without conversion" option).
  • Presumably you used a "user friendly" card like Starling or Chase etc. ?

Yes, Barclaycard Reward card. No exchange rate markup and cash withdrawals treated the same as purchases for interest, ie no interest if paid in full.
IIRC the DCC offer was £199 for EUR 200, declined it, and got charged £176 on my statement.

I assume Halifax clarity credit card would be ok?

Yes, the ATM should treat it the same. Presume you're aware that the Clarity charges immediate interest on cash withdrawals and how to minimise this.

  • It seems that Santander ATMs in Portugal are now fee free if you have a Santander UK current account with debit card.
This is a very recent development.
