  • How do people get settlements for there credit card and do baliffs turn up at your door for credit card debts etc
  • Hello. I am so sorry to hear you're in this position. I'm sure you will be back on your feet in no time.

Credit Card companies cannot touch your home as it is unsecured debt. Please dont worry about that.
I was worried they can get a ccj against me and then get a high court bailiff?
Please try to stop the overthinking.

Debts amounting to many times what you owe don`t get that treatment.

You have two, quite small credit card balances, your card providers will hardly bat an eyelid, once you inform them of your job loss, they will help you in the way I described above.

The money you owe is very near the bottom of the scale, any collection activity would consist of a few phone calls and the odd letter, this would remain the case forever and a day, if this turns into a long term affair, your accounts may be sold, or they may be sent to external collectors, either way, just keep whoever writes to you informed of your circumstances and you won`t have any trouble.

Forget bailiffs, high court enforcement, CCJ`s Jessie J`s, father Christmas, and the tooth fairy, non of that is going to happen.

And remember, they are both non priority debts, and should not be paid whilst you do not have any income, putting food on the table and paying your essential bills is far more important than credit cards.
To me it feels like a headache.

Settlements only happen a long long way down the line, by which time you’ll probably be back in a job and it’s no longer an issue.
You also need to understand the difference between debt collectors, (who have no legal power and lie through their teeth,)  and bailiffs who only turn up after someone’s got a CCJ which has already been explained is absolutely not on the radar for you at the moment. People get a CCJ when they make no attempt whatsoever to deal with the company to sort things out.
You have already been told to ask for breathing space. Stop panicking.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I wouldn't even bother with breathing space for two tiny credit card debts. They are not going to default you until 3-6 missed payments and more likely 6 rather than 3. Read other threads where people are trying to get defaulted

There are more important things to worry about here, like getting the payments you are entitled to, claiming benefits, searching for a new job, eating and staying warm
  • I'd say that a lot here depends on how fast you would expect to be re-employed. If you are in a fast moving industry and you are able to see this situation as a glitch, or you do the sort of work that means while you might be looking at a slightly different industry, your skills translate easily across, then you may well know that just as soon as you get your head straight you will be able to pick up more employment pretty fast. That would make your situation rather different to someone in an industry which is really struggling at the moment and who knows that they could be facing months of unemployment - and to me, that would make the approach different as well.

I agree with not fretting about paying the cards this month - your priority does indeed need to BE the priorities, so housing (inc council tax), heat, light and food. And as fatbelly says - that goes for your time as well as your money - treat getting what you are entitled to and looking for work like a job in itself!  If you fully expect (in so far as is possible) that in a month's time you will be back working though, then it may be that keeping a full dialogue with the card companies even while you explain to them that you can't make the payment this month (and explain why) may keep your credit file looking healthier in the longer term. (And again, that in itself comes down to how much you need to keep your credit file looking tip-top and what state it is in at the moment.)

OP - are you saying here you can't even pay your minimums? My reading of your initial post was that you can't clear your balances in full (i.e. interest free) this month because of the job loss.

Personally I don't think you ought to go straight into defaulting on your minimums if you can make them. As EH points out you may be employed again before too long and don't want to have damaged your credit file unnecessarily.
  • I’ve also started a side hustle. That I hope will benefit me

Let's hope both ventures work then...

You still need to be paid what you are due from your previous employer so I hope you are working on that
  • Sounding so positive already - good luck for your interview!
