An example is shoes, it's OK to try them on, but not go out in the rain with them on.
So to fully inspect the vac the only way to do so it to see what happens when you use it.
Would 15 minutes be too much time, rather than say 5 minutes or 2?
The fact the return might not be able to be sold as new isn't the consumers problem, it's a cost that retails have to bear for selling at distance.
Could you go into a high street retailer and vacuum the floor for 15 minutes?

Have tried other products in-store for over 15 minutes.

Do you like using Amazon? They may mark your card or even shut your account and every account at your address especially if you have previous for returns.2

I purchase a robot vacuum from Amazon a few days ago, I charged it last night and upon using it this morning decided it bumps into too many things so went online to look at the next model up. I noticed the next model up is now on sale at the same price for which I bought the first one. I would like to purchase the next model up, and return the initial model I purchased. My question is, where I have used it, will Amazon reject the return? Their policy says an item has to be unused within 30 days, however I believe the statutory return rights say you can return used items within 14 days? Is this true?I was planning on cleaning the robot vacuum (I only used it for about 15 minutes before deciding it wasn’t fit for purpose) and repackaging it so it looks as new as possible, but it is fully charged (it arrived uncharged) so Amazon may be able to detect that it’s used. Does this matter if they know it’s used if it’s within 14 days? And if they reject the return will they send the item back? In that case I will not open the better model incase I need to return as new. Thanks in advance!0 -
I just realised that according to the description it’s not meant to bump into things, it’s meant to sense them. In that case could it be returned under quality /performance not as expected, but surely they would know I have used it as to determine the performance I would have had to test it out? I don’t think I’ll end up getting the next model if I do return this one as it’s just a bit of a faff.Im assuming if I return it based on the above they’ll do some tests, but what happens if they deem it to be working as expected? My furniture etc will obviously be different to what they’re testing with so we could easily have different results.0

I don't live that far from the humungous Amazon shed where all UK returns finish up and I know a few people who work there.
They get thousands of returns every day. Your robot will get a cursory look-over to estimate its value and confirm you have not just sent half a brick in the box, then be listed as used in Amazon warehouse.
Many cheaper items returned, even if perfect, used to go for landfill. They didn't justify the small cost of listing, repackaging and sending out. Thanks to the intervention of local politicians, job lots of these returns are now donated to local charities.1 -

Personally I have found Amazon the easiest retailer to return items for whatever reason in the first 30 days, as long it's dispatched by them.
