Can i fit my own gas cooker or is it illegal?

I took out and bunged back in my gas cooker using the bayonet fitting which was simple after having the kitchen floor tiled however a while back but i am looking to get a new cooker soon and wondered if i can do this with the new one.
My other half does not like gas and wants to pay about the £100 to get the retailer to do this and give us the certificate to make sure but it just seems like such a rip off to me.
Enjoy everyday like it's your last!

    It's not a rip off.
It is illegal to tamper with gas unless you are fully qualified GAS SAFE engineerand can carry a prison sentence.
How much in cash do you value yours and your familys lives.

Is plugging in a cooker classed as tampering?

    He’s not plugging in , he’s installing a new hose ( or old)into a new cooker.
Is he qualified to put a test on the meter before/after, what if there is a small leak on the new cooker( not unheard off). Etc etc

You legally need that inspection certificate.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Not true, if it's your own appliance in your own home.  But you need to be competent to do the work.  Exactly what "competent" is isn't defined in the law.  Any work will have to be compliant with the https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/2451/contents/made  Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (as amended).

You need to be Gas Safe registered if working on someone else's gas appliances, either as an employee or as a self-employed fitter.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

True and proving your Competent  to your insurance company is another matter.
Thats why I won’t encourage people to carry out any form of gas work.

My understanding is that it is only unlawful if done for reward (i.e. payment). So it isn't actually technically unlawful to do this in your own home. However, as alluded to, competence is also a legal requirement.

I would certainly advise getting a gas plumber to do the work.

I haven’t bought a new gas cooker in my lifetime! Do they come with the bayonet hose connector already on?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

My husband bought a Moffat gas cooker from our vendors when we moved in. I was sure that I could smell gas. Husband couldn't smell it and told me that I was imagining it. We refurbished the kitchen and I bought a new gas cooker. I paid for installation as my husband's GasSafe qualies had lapsed as He had become a manager. He told the technician this story and laughed. Technician turned round to me and told me that I was right. The bayonet fitting was leaking enough gas to fill the kitchen in 48 hrs and it had been like that for more than ten years, because of husbands arrogant stupidity. They put in a new bayonet fitting and sorted it. Husband looked sheepish.
