Tax Code Confusion (Mk2)

Apologies. I asked this yesterday but got the facts wrong. Sorry if you replied....
In April of 2022 I left a job that had a tax code of 1173LX for most of the time I was there(3 years).
My new job started immediately, no gaps, same type of job, but more money (that's why I left) but for nearly a year now I've been on the tax code of 883TX.
I don't understand why I've been on this code for all of this time. Can you help?
Many thanks, Dave

Have you looked at your personal tax account ?
    https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account
That should give you details of how they've derived your tax code.
(As that's not a non-standard code then I think you should have received a coding notice letter to explain it when it was first changed).
  • Yep done all that, thank you. I just don't understand why there are two different codes for a similar job (with a bit more pay) and no change of circumstance. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Your tax account should show how they arrived at that code.
PAYE - Check current tax year - What makes up your tax free amount

  • The fact it's a T code often indicates one of two things,

Either you're expected earnings are over £100k or HMRC think this is a second job.

If you tell us how the 883T code is made up that should make the answer clearer.

Please don't simply repeat the fact that your code is 883T.  On its own that is utterly meaningless.
  • Thank you for that.
Ok Tax codes and full picture -
    Job 1 Up to April 8th 2022 - Tax Code 1173LX
    Job 2 after April 8th 2022 - Tax Code 883TX
During both jobs I receive a small pension with a Tax Code 197TX
    HMRC say this re 883TX
T - Your tax code includes specific adjustments because of your personal circumstances. Your employer or pension provider will not change it until HMRC reviews it.
X - Your tax is based on your pay in each pay period, not the whole year. This stops you paying too much tax in one go. Your payslip or pension statement could show this as W1/M1, or week1/month 1.
Thing is... Between Job 1 & Job 2 nothing has changed. I don't understand. I hope that clarifies things.

Sorry no, it doesn't clarify much at all as you still haven't provided the breakdown of how the 883T tax code has been calculated.

Until you are willing to provide that no one can possibly help you.
