Hi. You can port a number in at any time. and it is generally useful to check out a new supplier for a few days at least before porting your number.
Pretty much any supplier will have a webpage on 'bringing your number to us'

And at the risk of sounding like an apologist for your current network. "I have lost my phone and need to transfer my number" is quite a common form of identity fraud these days, so they have to be careful.2
