Broken laptop screen - fixable?
Comments
-
The option to obtain a replacement is all very well and good. I have changed 2 laptop screens and its not a job for a novice or diy'er.
So the OP unless knowledgeable would have all sorts of problems and would need to pay someone to do the actual swap over this should be factored into any overall costs.
(you need to disassemble the screen and also remove the keyboard to get at the ribbon cable connectors, the screen surround is very flimsy and its easy to damage the plastic securing tabs. Also ensure when carrying out this repair of the static hazards.)
Well, its an hours work tops, so i'd be phoning my local computer repair shop saying, if i had the screen, how much would it cost to swap over.
Another option would be to sell it for spares / repair on ebay, if you can show that it otherwise works there are plenty of laptop breakers who will buy it.0 -

I know what's involved and the risks associated with repairing the screen and could certainly fix it in a time less than 1 hour but what i said was that it should not be undertaken by a novice so therefore be prepared to pay.
As for taking your own bits and bob's to a reputable repairer i would not fit a customers supplied part such as this unless i supplied it.0 -

I knew you knew how long it would take to change it, it was more for the benefit of the o/p if he went down my suggested route - in case some (dis)reputable repairer convinced him there was a lot of labour involved, and i was agreeing with you that if it was something the o/p felt was beyond their ability it was still 'doable' by getting someone else to fit it.
Also, i know of many reputable repairers who would do this - ourselves included. My wording read ask the shop 'if i had the screen...' so it would do no harm in asking up front to see if its viable.0 -
I had to replace my screen after I punched...I mean broke mine, cost me £80 for the screen, it was a "compatible" screen not OEM, just needed a micro screw driver set to open up the laptop, took about half an hour to fit it, check ebay for screens or "spares or repairs" laptops with the same screen as yours, if it's an old laptop it could be a good excuse to upgrade to a new one.......or maybe you could claim on house insurance? There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...0

Yeah, i agree. Its not the end of the world to do, and if the o/p can get a screen for £80 and at worst an hours labour if they cant do it themselves then thats worthwhile.
Its not the expensive job some 'reputable repairers' would have you believe.0 -
My screen broke a few years ago and I tried to fix it myself. I ended up causing more damage to the wiring and screws. Handling a new screen is difficult too, as they're so fragile.
I learnt from my mistakes when it broke AGAIN not long after, so I looked on the internet and found a company called Ace Support. Most companies replace the screen for between £70 and £80, plus another £80 for the screen at least. Their labour charges were about half that.
Plus, I got my computer back last Wednesday. I only sent it last Monday!!!
I just wanted to recommend a good company. Good luck. :money:0 -
you can pick up new screens for most lappys on ebay for £40-£50. Even if you pay someone to do it, still less than £100.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Yes, but you pay a lot for them, and generally you can only get them through the maker - laptops are a lot less standardised than PCs.
Is not true. Screens are one thing where they're pretty agnostic - as long as they've got the right 20 or 24 pin connector on the back they'll fit and there are only maybe 5 screen manufacturers in the entire world. Plenty of third party companies supply screens. I use one called Analogic. Not the cheapest but very good quality and 100% compatible - usually being the same make as the screen being replaced.
Depending on the laptop and labour rates, £130 or so should see you with one supplied and fitted.0
