Sim card for several countriies

I want a sim card that works with one number in different countries, in particular South. Africa and US.  My supplier Virgin tells me that is impossible, even if I pay extra.
Currently I buy local sim cards which are inconvenient and expire after a period without use
Any ideas?

    Isn't what you are wanting is just 'roaming' with a UK number?

    Roaming would work in most of the US, but I suspect that there might be some areas of South Africa where Virgin don't have a roaming agreement with any of the local networks...
