    Yup, that's a well.

That's fab. A friend had one in the kitchen of their old house, covered in suitable glass, and lit. Terrific when the light was switched on.

It would be a shame to have to fill it.
Any idea what was involved? Structural engineers?  Building Control officer issues? I agree it would be a shame to fill!

Think we could do with more information before people can give thoughts on it.

    What depth is it
Can you see water at bottom of it
    What width is it
    Are the walls lined
Are you in city or rural area

Think of it as a opportunity.
I will get as many measurements as possible tomorrow, yes you can see water at the bottom, I’m rural and the construction looks like a Victorian brick pattern (according to google!)

id say it’s about half a metre wide, really jot sure in depth but my husband has said maybe 15ft
If you want to measure depth get a length of string/ rope and put weight on end of it, lower it down till you reach water surface then bring it up and measure then do same again but let weight reach bottom of well and bring up and measure.
Not sure if that will  help but you would know depth of water in well.

    Lovely thing to find.

    Only one drop is required.

When the weight reaches the water surface, mark the rope at the top and then let it drop further to the bottom of the well and mark again.

The difference between the marks gives you the depth of the water.

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

How do you know when it hits the water?

Or drop to the bottom of the water and deduct the wet from the dry for the depth off the water. :)
  • I would suggest you talk to both a structural engineer and the BC officer on the phone, and see what they say. I don't think either would be needed, if away from the main property, but you will need to ensure it is made safe, or suffer legal consequences of an accident.

(Suggest you buy a Collie dog, and keep all children named Timmy away from it, just in case....)
