Charging mobiles

I've heard/read about not charging overnight and charging to only 80%.  What is the score, why not overnight and why to only 80%?

TIA
David.

  • It is to protect the lifespan of the battery. It's not good to leave a battery fully charged and not being used. The same with EVs.

There are hundreds, probably more, websites with information about battery charging and what is best practice.

I have always charged phones overnight and never had any issues.  Currently (no pun intended) my iphone uses optimized charging - details are here

Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

  • At the suggestion of Samsung I charge my phone overnight to 85%. Charging is "smart" to preserve battery life.

Occasional charges to 100% if there's heavy/extended use expected.

It's a matter of priorities. Charge your phone overnight to 100% is easy, it may reduce the energy stored in the battery slightly over the long term or shorten the life of the battery. If your phone battery doesn't last very long already or you plan to keep the phone a long time then perhaps it may be worth taking more care over the charging. In my case the phone easily lasts all day and the phone will probably be changed long before the battery dies, so I'll carry on with the easy charging regime.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Well I charge my phone when it gets down to about 20%, often less, but it's always charged to 100%.
If not needing charged, it's always switched off overnight.
And from the replies here, it would seem that the jury's out on the matter, I certainly haven't noticed any deterioration in the battery life.

But thanks all for your input.
    David.
