Born_again - it is, but also happened when recording cardio session with no GPS, so not exclusively linked to use of gps. Not really any pattern I can see.1

I don't blame you for persevering with it. I bought a TomTom watch a few years ago for £50. A brilliant bit of kit that had good GPS accuracy, a decent app to sync to and it had a 'ghost' feature where you could run against your previous runs and it would tell you how many metres ahead or behind your chosen run you were. TomTom stopped making fitness watches, then stopped supporting them, so I switched to Garmin. A forerunner 35 cost me £85 in the sale and it's been great, even if it doesn't have that ghost feature I liked. The trouble is, when it dies, the entry level Garmin models are now £130. In the rush to add training plans and all the other bells and whistles such as inaccurate wrist-based heart rate monitors and the ability to get music and phone alerts while I'm running, there seems to be a gap in the product line for someone like me who just wants a basic, decent, accurate tracker that doesn't cost a fortune. When this one dies I'll probably just use a redundant iphone and strava.2

Aylesbury_duck, I agree, that is why I tend to buy second hand - people upgrade so often you can get perfectly reasonable tech pretty cheaply, same with mobile phones. I had an FR610 which did exactly what I needed, then the strap broke and no way to replace it (other than cobbling something together). Same with wife's garmin.1
