I had a booked flight with Air New Zealand from LHR to LA the day before lockdown.  With the Covid news in the UK, I decided to cancel the outbound flight, good job as the UK went into lockdown and I would still have been in LA when return flight was due.  Air New Zealand have been brilliant throughout, since it was my choice to cancel the outbound leg, gave me vouchers to rebook etc.  The flight was very cheap (hence happy to risk losing all money) due to ANZ stopping flights from LHR, so no chance to rebook. I recently enquired if they were in partnership with airlines that do still fly from LHR or the credit note they keep reminding me about would just lapse.  Today I received an email saying they were refunding the money to the credit card (it was actually a debit card) that I booked with, should appear in 3-5 days.  I have since switched banks, using the SWITCH service, so I know any money sent to old account should be forwarded to the new one. My question is, does it matter that the DC used at time of booking with old bank has by now expired? Old bank current card says 01/21 valid from.
Since I thought I'd lost the money anyway, fi it does come through it will be a nice surprise.

  • Up date.

Refund was rejected by old bank due to old card. I would have thought it went to the account rather than the card?  ANZ email asking for new card numbers, sending to them in two emails.  Still wondering if this is genuine or not.  email does comply with ANZ email and they are using "Kia Ora name" in the greeting but still now sounding a bit iffy.  They did have the ANZ Locator Letters in the email. If it is a scam it is a very good one, as I thought I'd done all the checks I can.

  • Further update.
ANZ have indeed refunded the money to my new bank account.  Very quickly. Only regret is that I did not get to actually fly with them because if this is how they treat their customers, I have probably missed an excellent service. I’m sure they did not legally have to refund my fare, even the offered credit note would have been a bonus if I had been able to use it.  LHR’s loss that they no longer fly from there.
