  • Nationwide debit cards (certainly for the Flex Plus account) are still fee free for overseas transactions - we use them whenever we're out in Tenerife (without conversion ofc)

Only fee free withdrawing cash if the ATM bank imposes no usage charge.
There are several "user friendly" debit cards - the problem is finding a hole in the wall which is also fee free.
They've become fewer and fewer in more recent times.

  • Banca March must be one of the only remaining banks in the Canary Islands to not charge ATM fee for foreign cards. Just used one of their ATMs in Gran Canaria- Yumbo Centre with no fee. Just remember to select WITHOUT conversion to get the Mastercard or Visa conversion rate. I used Starling Bank Mastercard debit, which has no foreign currency fees. The with conversion rates were 0.97!
I also don’t get much cash out these days in Spain as like the UK since covid card payments are more common than cash, with the exception of taxis etc. So my advice is get a card with no foreign exchange fees put it on your Apple Pay and try and find a free ATM for some cash and spend this only when you can’t pay on card. Always select EURO whe ln you pay on a U.K. card in Spain.

Good to hear Banca March are still fee-free.  Most banks in Spain do charge now.

I find this app very useful for finding fee-free ATMs abroad. Used it in a few countries and it's been accurate.  It's free, and I have no affiliation to it! ATM Fee Saver - Find fee free ATMs abroad and save money

    That's interesting and useful, thanks.
Banca Marche and Deutsche Bank are the only ones that may be fee free still - apart for a UK Santander debit card at fully branded Banco Santander ATMs as located at branches.
  • I forgot to give a thank you nod of the head to Doshwasher for flagging up Unicaja ATMs - there is a branch in the centre of the resort where we holiday, so I'll give it a road test when there in a few weeks time, making a small withdrawal using Chase in case I goof up.
Apparently the option route to achieve the Without Conversion best deal is not as clear as other bank ATM choices.
