water meter reading

in Water bills
My meter was successfully read a couple of weeks ago and a bill duly generated. It was read along with the others in the road by a water company van that simply passed by, and it wasn't going particularly slowly either.
It occurred to me to wonder if the meter has some power source such as a battery to enable it to respond to the van's radio link query, or whether it is entirely passive like the chip in a bank card. If it does have a battery, surely this will need replacing at some point?
