Free location app

Just been invited to Life360, a location app for family members. It seems OK. Then I read user reviews on their fb page and now I'm uncertain. Apart from many people experiencing technical issues, the company have alledgedly been selling personal info.

Can anyone recommend such a free site please?

Why do you need a location app?

Most phones (and desktop computers/browsers) can already do "find my location", as can Google Maps.

Note that location as determined in this fashion is not 100% exact.  It will often only be an approximation or the generic "around about" area.

Presumably the family want to be able to see each others locations not their own.

Our family are iPhone users so can use the built in Find My and Find My Friends apps

We use Life360 to keep an eye on a relative with early stages of dementia who tends to take a walk around the block when stressed. It works well and enables more than one person to monitor the situation.

Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

    Not an Alcoholic...!
  • Do you want something so that when you are out and about and have an accident or fall your family can find you.
  • It's good to be reminded why I have two mobile phones.

and that, is precisely our interest and motivation. Nothing more, nothing less.

Because of age and mobility issues, rare to I go out alone. So installing the app to monitor someone else, has a double benefit.
  • Is this of any help, using google maps

I can see the benefit of it, and I might have considered it for my mum before she died had I known about it (and if it existed at the time) but I can see two potential flaws: first, the person to be monitored must have a suitable phone on which the app will work, which may not be possible on the types of phone that some older people are comfortable with; and second, the phone has to be with them, which if they have dementia might easily not be the case.
  • Free and easy to use are not always compatible. There are ones that don't need phones such as Personal Locator Beacons, but they cost money. The original poster wanted something free.
