Sexism in london rental market

Hi

Looking at rentals there seems to be an overwhelming preference for females for rental properties in the ad. If discrimination is against law in workplace why not in rental market?

They should be prohibited from advertising for women only.

What are men meant to do if no rentals?

Thanks

    Is this for lodger type agreements, where you would be living with your landlord? Or whole property rentals?

    They are prohibited from discriminating for tenancy agreements, but not for lodgers.
    I've never seen a flat advertised for 'let to women only'.

    spareroom. I am sick of seeing "females only". Looks like homelessness for men around the corner

    As a female, I understand the landlords point of view. There is a vulnerability in having someone move in who you have only met briefly, that vulnerability is greater if the lodger is male.
    Why is being a male a threat if you know their occupation / have references / and can control notice periods? Where does that leave society if landlords are supporting discrimination. I think its disgusting.

    You are talking about somebody sharing a home,/ sharing a kitchen/bathroom  with someone else.,  which is very different from renting a self contained unit.

    A female is entitled to decide  she does not want to share her home with a male, no matter how respectable he is.

    @F37A
    I agree it's a question to ask - why is being a male a threat?  The answer is of course that some (not all) have proved to be a threat by often being stronger, more aggressive, not being able to take a no at face value.  If some men weren't a threat prisons wouldn't be divided into those for men & for women.  The same with toilets in public places, changing rooms, etc.  If some weren't a threat women wouldn't be told to not dress in certain ways or not to walk home alone at night.  The list goes on and on.

    It's sad and unfortunate that "discrimination" like this is necessary.

    Harold Shipman would have had perfect references/occupation…….
    quite - since Harold's days all doctors have had to revalidate 5 yearly and get feedback from patients in the form of surveys, every time we do it we chunter that Harold would never have had any problems in getting glowing scores for this
