Why does Barclaycard does not support google pay?

It may have something to do with what phones can use the different apps.  I know there was a point when a lot of Barclays people were being told they couldn't use any of their apps due to their mobiles being either too old or too new.

Because Barclays always want to do their own thing. The other banks set up Paym, and Barclays went their own way with Pingit.

There's something about the NFC control in iphones, it can only be used by apple for apple pay. But the NFC thing in android phones is open, so Barclays can write their own app for it instead of allowing google pay/samsung pay. I don't think it's the case that you even have to pay google to use google pay, unlike apple pay.

Isn't this called competition? If you use somebody else's app there's always the possibility (maybe eventually, when it's entrenched) that they may start charging for its use, or modifying the app in some way that's detrimental to your business. You lose control. Maybe Barclays don't want to get into that position? This would seem like a reasonable policy - not one that all banks would choose to adopt, but what's wrong with being different? If you the customer don't like it, you are free to change credit card provider.

Both Applepay and Googlepay charge retailers more than Visa, Mastercard or Amex.

Visa and Mastercard are limited to 0.3% charge I believe for in-store transactions.

Not sure how much Amex charges retailers.

Googlepay (after a quick Google) can charge retailers upto 4%.

Barclays get a cut of the fee charged to retailers.

Perhaps by offering their own app, they can charge the same as Googlepay but more of the fee goes to them.

As an aside, I umderstand Visa and Mastercard can charge much more than 0.3% for on-line or not present transactions.

This is full of inaccuracies. 

Apple / Google (Pay) get a small slice of the card issuer's fee. This is more than covered by lower physical card issuance costs and lower card fraud. The retailer isn't charged extra to accept them.

NFC in iPhones can be used by apps for some things, it's just locked down for payment services so Apple users only have the option of ApplePay. Imagine that this is ultimately going to change with various courts now ruling that Apple has to allow 3rd party stores and side loading of applications... not sure if the APIs will allow new apps to immediately create wallet/payment apps but if not it'll only be a matter of time before that's the next focus is wallet apps.

For the Barclays debit card only.

Not yet for the Barclaycard credit card yet, unfortunately.

Perhaps now on the radar though.

I’d missed this from Barclays so thanks for the heads up. I’ve added my Barclays debit card to Google Wallet. Hopefully Barclaycard will follow in due course.
