Feeling desperately inadequate

Hello
Just wanted to say I am thinking of you. A close family friend had a few very difficult years and terrible things happened to him which were beyond his control. As a result he has been an alcoholic for two years, and he is only 19. It is desperately hard to watch and I constantly feel that I am not doing enough. I feel so guilty because I will be seeing him quite a lot over Christmas and in a way I'm terrified of spending tiume with him! I can only imagine how much worse it must be when it is your precious son.
I will keep you and your son in my thoughts and I sincerely hope things improve. He is lucky to have someone who cares so much about him.
PS has he addressed the reason why he became an alcoholic? I know every scenario is different but with my friend it was a combination of two specific things which he couldn't bear to deal with. He is learning to come to terms with these events and as far as I know this is beginning to help tackle his addiction. Just a thought.why be a song, when you can be a symphony?0 -
Great advice from everyone. There should be a telephone number on the Al Anon webpage, ring it. It will put you in touch with local Al Anon members. My husband is an Alcoholic, now been sober for about two months. I attend Al Anon meetings and it gives me great comfort to know that other people are in the same situation as me. In Al Anon they too work the 12 steps of AA but from the family prospective and it does work. At the first meeting, I was given some leaflets and wow, did that open my eyes!!! Good luck, even though you won't be able to help the Alcoholic as they need to help themselves, Al Anon will give you the tools to cope.0
