I’m travelling to New Zealand for just under a month and I have been leant a car on each island by friends to use while I’m there. They have both said I don’t need insurance but I just wanted to check this was correct

It seems that New Zealand differs from pretty much everywhere else, in that car insurance is apparently not compulsory, so if they effectively choose to self-insure then they're probably right:

They already have their own insurance on the cars, they said that would cover me as well as the car is insured not the person0

Just back from New Zealand and was able to drive my daughters cars with no extra cost to them. They don’t have any sort of compensation claims in accidents so insurance not the same costs as uk. But on the other side if you are involved in an accident not your fault you can not claim for your injuries.1
