, and she didn’t realize the mistake.
She now faces a £14000 bill for the unrecovered car and the insurance company are refusing to help.
Does anyone know if she has any rights or if there’s anything she can do?They were quite willing to accept her premiums , even though her previous car will be owned and insured by someone else..
There is no register of legal owners of vehicles in the UK and so no way for the insurers to validate that someone else owned it. They could see someone else was the registered keeper but there is no legal requirement for the insured to be the registered keeper... in various circumstances this could be a finance company, family or friend etc.
In principle they could have seen dual insurance but again there is nothing illegal about that... I may be happy for my neighbour to borrow my car but not for them to risk my NCD and so tell them to get their own insurance on it.
Unfortunately this is almost certainly a very hard lesson for not following instructions.0 -
She put 6 months tax on it when she bought it from a ford dealership, she then swapped her car details with her insurance she had at the time, which had roughly 8 months to run….hence why it didn’t show any problem when taxing it again…the insurance then ran out 2 months later…
And as she used go compare it had details on fro her old card…same make and model , just an eco sport….she should have checked the details closely but as per prev message, people do this on iPhones…1 hand and 1 eye whilst watching tv…..0 -

Quite. An expensive mistake ☹️How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -

Exactly that and that would have really been expensive and long lasting ie points on the licence
I'm never sure how people can do stuff like this on mobiles, possibly becuse I dont do stuff like this on mobile but many others do..
I've made a mistake re Mrs Diy's Dob, put it in same as mine. It was only when we stayed with the insurance outfit for the second year I was looking at the ins docs/certs etc I noted that year of birt was wrong for here as I put in mine for her as well. Straight away I rang them and they said ok, we will sort it out and charged bme an extra few quid. They could have easily said extra for the year before and I would have paid but they did not.
Always double check the important details and even then, you can misread stuff if you are like me, ie on auto pilot.

I'm guessing its only just been stolne and judging by price of the car its not a top flight car that is stole for parts/etc.
hopefully she will soo get it back
Good luck
It's not just "top flight" cars that are stolen for parts, the police here have been leaving leaflets on Ford Fiestas (including mine) warning of a spate of thefts and offering to review car security, I arranged a visit from them and they said that the main reason for the thefts was for parts. They put a sticker in my back window so that if a patrol car sees it being driven between 10pm and 6am they will consider stopping it to check ownership, and they gave me a Faraday pouch to keep my keys in at home (I was already using a steering wheel lock after a previous foiled attempt to break in).

You're probably more likely to be targeted for parts if you drive a common model. Corsas and Fiestas etc.
I saw one case in the news recently, where someone had their car stripped, for parts, whilst they were at a gig. I can't remember the model, but it was a smallish hatchback.
Edit - found the story, it was a Citroen C1How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
