  • My daughter cannot register her Revolut card with Google pay, as she is under 16, so she has stuck with her HyperJar card which, for some reason, allows her to attach to her Google Wallet.

Not sure if Apple Pay has same limitations. Good luck. I'll keep an eye on this thread :+1:
Mine has registered her Revolut (and HSBC) with Apple Pay, no problems

Why choose our under 18's bank account?

You won't have to pay any regular set fee to have this account.

Buy things in shops or online, and withdraw cash with your contactless debit card.

Works with Apple Pay and Google Pay™.

Earn 2.02% AER / 2.00% Gross p.a. (variable) interest on your balance.

Manage your account wherever, whenever with our mobile banking app.

Parent needs to have an account with NatWest to qualify for this one.

  • Do any of the teen accounts suggested manage to tick all these boxes for a 14 year old?
    -apple pay
    - able to authenticate (approve for security in the app) her own transactions (as opposed to parent having to authenticate)
-allow normal online bank transfers so she can give family members/friends her sort code and account number and they can transfer directly to her account (not via parent account)
    - have a decent modern app where she can easily see her transactions and balance and transfer money to friends/family

Yes Santander, the app is good, uses face and fingerprint recognition to sign in so no having to remember passwords. Works on PC, Macbook iPad etc

My now 14yo has had since he was 11 accounts with Barclays, RBS, HSBC and more recently Santander and all came with Debit Cards (HSBC is the only one that looks different than an adult one) that he can manage and indeed use to pay in his Apple Wallet (as part of my Family account, the address book for delivery when using Apple Pay online looks to be restricted to my own addresses).

As a side note, Barclays and RBS will not allow Fast Payment  to third parties, but HSBC and Santander do.

My teenage son has both Natiowide and HSBC which come with debit cards that he uses with Apple Pay. He has the app for both and can also make faster payments with no issues.  For Natiowide he also has one of their savings accounts and upon my suggestion he keeps his money in that until needed as it pays higher interest on his balance. He then transfers what he needs to the current account as and when he wants to spend.

My daughter has a Nationwide Flex One and can do all of those things. The app is somewhat crude but she can see the balance and pay people. The only downside is that she has to use one of those silly card readers to add new payees.

Apple Pay family is restricted to you and your address

She needs a bank account and Apple ID of her own to be independent

  • Apple Pay should work with all children’s current accounts over the age of 13, although I’d recommend Nationwide FlexOne as my go to. It’s got a decent interest rate (if there’s small amounts in it doesn’t matter as much), great app, completely solo for your child and also has no fees attached at all, something unusual from other banks. Plus, great customer service and being a Nationwide member will open them up to many other great offers at 18 and they can keep this account to £23 with a free overdraft when they hit 18.

As far as I know you only have to register a card with Apple that then goes in the Apple wallet and becomes Apple Pay
The majority don’t seem to allow this for under 16s. For example her Starling one won’t. Hence my question.
I doubt you will beat the link born_again provided then. I'm with Santander and my card is on Apple Pay, never had a problem

Are Santander still offering the switching reward ? Not sure whether she would be acceptable for that but worth a try

I don’t believe that it’s available for those under 18.
