Glad I stumbled upon this thread. I am interested in becoming a bookkeeper and eventually self employed (i'm sure there are easer ways but..)

One of the women at work suggested a AAT course? Woudl this be worth while or should I be looking at a different course?

I understand how accounts work and have a GSE and A level in Account and a degree in Business Management (which includes accounting). I used to work as a Fiduciary accounts technitan at Marsh but have now been in marketing for 2 years.

I have worked extremely hard to become AAT and ACCA qualified that has taken me several years to complete and at a cost of £12k, the exams are extremely hard to pass, but in my view these are easy compared to the everyday ethical dilemas and challenges that an Accountant faces and experience is definately key.

Once qualified it doesn't end there, you have to keep up to date with CPD training and new or revised accounting standards and guidelines.

So to be up and running as a bookkeeper in 4 weeks is a nigh on impossibility.

Please don't take offence and none is intended in this post.

People who work hard to qualify in finance look down on bookkeepers generally and I think this is because they are 50% of the time (if not higher) people who "quite fancy bookkeeping" and go on a quick course to learn how to do so. What these people don't learn is what's involved in the compliance side of things, nor the tax and they also, suprisingly don't often know what debits and credits are!

I think bookkeeping should follow on from becoming an accountant, this is the only way one will know how the job should be done properly.

Those who wish to go further in their studies can go straight into AAT level 2 when the course starts.
Surely this is still a recognised qualification?

Um, hate to tell you this hun but the first level AAT isn't compulsorary.

It would take you 4 weeks alone just to understand what a debit and credit is. ;-)

There's an online skills test on the AAT website, it should give you an idea of whether or not you've got Debits and Credits cracked.
