The OP says 'an item of clothing'.

In M&S T&Cs 'What can I return? Exceptions' a number of items of clothing are listed which cannot be returned to store, only returned by post in their original packaging.

They include bridesmaid's dresses, maternity clothing and 'any other products as notified at the time'.

If the OP's item of clothing falls in this category they would not have been able to return it in store, however many days ago it was bought.

  • Looking online apparently each item now has a unique code so they can tell when it was bought and for how much.

Hi. I have an item of clothing to return which is just outside the 35 day window. The store won’t help. If it’s a gift why won’t they exchange the item or give a credit does anyone know? Ive complained and they won’t budge. Thank you.

Why do you want to return it?

If its because its faulty the answer is very different to if the gift recipient just didn't like it or it didn't fit etc
Thank you. It didn’t fit.  I thought that if you returned an item without a receipt and it still had tags and was current stock that you could have an exchange or credit to the current value.  I was trying to find out if that’s still the case so I could at least do that.
    What question are you asking?

Are you asking (1) whether you can still return something outside the 35 day return time limit, or (2) whether you can return a gift item without a receipt?

If (1) then no, you can't do so unless they allow you to.  They put a 35 day limit on their returns policy so if you are over 35 days they can refuse you.

If (2) it appears you can do so and you will get get a "credit receipt" at the most recent price, valid for 12 months.  But I presume you would still need to return it within 35 days.

Re question 2. How would they know if I was returning within the 35 day period if I did not have a receipt?
Given when purchasing they tend to ask in the run up to christmas. Do you want a gift receipt. So given the OP must know the date of purchase, or how would they know it was over the time limit. Why have they not got the gift receipt?
