MOT results and expiry?

My MOT expires middle of Feb. Last week my car went in for the test, it failed on bald tyres (dangerous) and a linkage ball joint (minor). I had the tyres replaced but not the linkage as didn't have money for it just yet.

I am still driving the car about until it goes in next week for the repair and re-mot. Am I still ok to drive it? I read that you can still drive if failed an mot but as long as the certificate is still in date.

I think you can only drive it when you take it to the garage for repairs and MOT. Once it has failed the certificate is in valid so you are driving it with no insurance either.

Your old MOT is still valid till the end date even if your car failed it new one taken before this date.
You cannot drive the car until it is repaired only if the fault is listed as dangerous by the MOT tester.

You're fine.  You've fixed the dangerous and major faults.

When they changed the MOT test, DVLA tried to make out that a 'dangerous' invalidated the previous MOT, but there was no change in the law.  When challenged, they backtracked.

Look up your MOT status online if you don't believe me.  https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

Not having an MOT carries a fine and no points.  Not relevant to you, as you have an MOT.
Driving a car in an unroadworthy condition carries a fine AND points.  If you'd been caught, you committed an offence driving to the MOT station.  You've fixed it now, so your car is roadworthy again.

Were the tyres bald or just below the 1.6mm minimum thread depth.

Did you know that the tyres were bald?

Do you check your tyres regularly? If not may I politely suggest that you do so in future. It isn't just your life and limb that is at risk with bald tyres.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

That is simply wrong. The certificate remains valid.
    Hi

Even when there is a red warning I think its called when it is considered too dangerous to drive.

NB: I know this poster has not said that but I posted this just to be a bit more clear.

    Thanks is advance

I was thinking that but thought no point in posting about it.
I recall and old banger bmw 5 series pulling up into a fat fit tyre outfit where i was having my tyre puncture repaired.

I'm not joking but the two front tyres where slicks look-alikes and rears close the woman was driving an the man with her said they had changed them from the back. As I stood there I wanted to call the cops.

    Thanks

Yes, the old MOT remains valid until its expiry date.

Yes, this question crops up quite frequently.  The existing MOT is still valid until its expiry date, even if it's been "superseded", as it were, by a failed MOT.  So you wouldn't be fined for having no MOT.
You could be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, but that's completely unrelated to the MOT status (and in your case you've said you rectified the "dangerous" items, so you're OK on that front).
A realistic example might be that you get your car MOT'd today and it passes.  In 6 months time, a tyre has worn well below the legal limit.  If you were to be stopped, you're perfectly OK on the MOT front, but you'd be prosecuted for the illegal tyre.
