Landline telephone

Options
I'm thinking of getting a home phone in, rather than use mobile. How much is line rental these days for a home phone?  Call costs?

You may well struggle to find a provider for a landline only, most services are now bundled with broadband.

Secondly, with the withdrawal of the copper landline service planned for the next few years, you may find that nobody will actually install something that will be redundant in the near future.
  • I already have breadline, I'm wondering how much extra monthly charges are if I get a phone in too

I pay £8 (going up to £10) for landline which includes all UK calls and mobiles.

If you mean you have BROADBAND over a copper line you must have an allocated phone number, so just go to your ISP's site and look at the call charges, you'll already be paying line rental as part of the package, all you need to do is connect a handset.

If you have full fibre, ask them if the offer VoIP services.

Depends on who is providing your ‘breadline’ only service , if it were BT for example, the official price is £5 that adds a phone number , it ability to answer incoming calls on that number , probably a ‘free’ DV handset , and PAYG calls ( so each call billed for ) or for £7.50 instead of PAYG its 700 minutes included, but other broadband providers will have different charges and some may not offer a phone service

Can you say where you get that from?
    We pay three times that!

Do you think that if we 'tagged' @GrannyKate we would get the answer? ;)
  • I couldn't agree more with Ayr_Rage. I have had a contract with John lewis for pre-fibre home 'phone and broadband. They've decided to leave the market, so I'm now out of contract with Plusnet, who actually provide(d) the service. For the last couple of weeks I've been trying to find a replacement provider, but although I've completed the 'form' within MSE and got a list of potential suppliers, once I dig into the detail it appears that none of them actually offer a contract for standard broadband and a landline. The exception may be Shell, but when the link accesses their website it's perhaps relevant that it just 'hangs'; however if I enter my details straight into their site I don't get this option, only different flavours of Fullfibre..........Frankly I'm thoroughly brassed off being given all this hassle with Openreach or anyone else not being considerate enough to 'come clean' and own up to what seems to me a move for the telecomms industry to collectively stick two fingers up to its customers by making copper lines obsolete now so they can say to HMG 'aren't we clever we've moved to fibre two years early'. Finally I'm not especially being a Luddite, but with the intention of moving house this year it is much more convenient to keep our existing arrangement in the short-term.

Thanks for reading - apologies for the rant!

Your telephone exchange may have moved into a state of Fibre Priority - you can stay with your existing package/ISP for now but Openreach won't allow any other ISPs to order anything other than "Full Fibre" .Check at    BT Broadband (btwholesale.com)
Remember that there are target dates for Openreach to complete changeovers to digital phone services by Dec. 2025 (shutting down of the old phone switching network but not removing all copper) and full fibre by 2030ish, but individual exchanges will move over before those dates - some are in the throes now.
