Replacing a hob

Does your hob have a make on it, Sadie? If so, Google that model. If you find a match, then Google the installation instructions for it - it'll have the cutout dims in there.
However something really fortuitous just happened. Bumped into a former colleague and in our chit chat about what we'd been up to since we last saw each other I obviously mentioned buying a house. Turns out her partner does kitchens and joinery! So I have his number so can ask him to take a look and possibly fit one for me. Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to respond here. I now feel I can have a relatively informed chat with him. Cheers all!1 -

I think it's laminate, based on the rest of the kitchen (and indeed house) I imagine it's whatever the cheapest possible option is! Hopefully my chap will be able to sort it, whatever it is!0

So...fun times. Talked to my joiner chap who advised me that legally it needs to be a qualified electrician that installs hobs. It's not like the police are gonna come knocking and plenty of people do their own, but technically not allowed. So I thought I'd better do it by the book and found a couple of hobs on AO that had offers for free/half price installation. Except when I started to order, it asked me if I have a big red switch by the cooker. I don't (and it's not a plug either, the wire just goes straight into the wall) and when I answered "no" AO told me I couldn't have installation. So, back to the drawing board I guess.0

Electric hobs can be installed by any competent person, and they don't need to be qualified to do it.But.... If you don't have an isolation switch near your existing hob, where does the cable go to ?It may be that you need a new circuit installed back to the consumer unit (that bit would need a competent/qualified person) and a switch fitted near the hob.If this place was a rental, the lack of a switch should be noted on any EICR paperwork you had.
