I totally agree about AI.  Much of the enjoyment we get is from eating the local cuisine - properly cooked, not some kind of interpretation to make it acceptable to all palates i.e. bland.  Maybe truly high end AI is different, but we still prefer to be out and about.

Towels twisted into the shapes of swans/elephants/animal of choice lined up on your bed from staff who are doing it because they want a tip.

Minibars and room service  -I’m too tight to pay those extortionate prices.
Minibars aren't always expensive, they always seem to be in UK hotels but in Europe they're often similar or cheaper than pub prices.

Previous thread reminds me.  Centerparcs, totally wasted on me.  Awful concept, although they they are missing a trick.

They could charge people to visit it like a zoo where you can stand the wrong side of the compound and watch the people who have paid far more to be fenced in for a few days.
In the UK they are vastly overpriced, in Europe eg NL they are far better value. Also Duinrell in NL is a similar concept but far better and far cheaper, there's even an excellent onsite theme park included in the price.

I used to think that but we've been on a few AIs, just because they were similar cost to RO/SC, and the food was very good and massive selection. They had all the boring rubbish like burger and chips for those who wanted it, but also freshly prepared local food. We expected to eat out a lot but in the end didn't as the hotel food was so good.

All Inclusive in hotels, as a general rule.
Half Board is good enough for us.
We don't want to be tied to the hotel for midday eats - and I prefer other types of beer than the standard issue local brew - so it's a visit to the supermarket to see if they have any IPA types (there are Spanish brands if you can find them) or wheat beer.
We did AI once with son and heir - not the best of experiences, however that was down to a poor choice of hotel - mea culpa !!!
Did it with the grandkids more recently - but at their age it was a no brainer........ junk food and drinks available during the day as and when required.

There's one near us and I know exactly what you mean! :D Mind you, I adored Butlins when I was little.

We also have a local holiday park that (a) backs onto the Council landfill site/recycling centre and (b) looks exactly like a POW camp. When we pass it on our way to said recycling centre we always sing the theme from 'The Great Escape' and look out for tunnels.
