Probate and inheritance tax forms

Can anyone help please?  I am so confused.  When I rang the helpline and asked them to send me any forms I needed to fill out following my father's death I was asked if the estate was paying IHT.  A long discussion then followed where I told them that if I applied my father's NRB and RNRB plus, possibly, transferring RNRB from my deceased mother, if necessary, (she died in 2012 and she had exceeded her own NRB when she died but had not used any RNRB) then I probably wouldn't have to pay IHT.  My father's estate is very close to but does not exceed the £500k threshold (his NRB plus his RNRB).  It so far totals just over £499,000 and unless I have missed any assets which I have not yet found (I will double and triple check) then I won't need to transfer any of my mother's RNRB.

Today I have received just a PA1P form which I am currently filling out.  I am on Section 7 Inheritance Tax.  7.1 asks 'Did you complete an IHT400 and IHT421 form?' and other questions are asking about other IHT forms and asking whether I have completed them.   I thought the helpline would have sent me all the forms I needed but obviously not!  Do I now need to contact them again and ask them to send them?  And do I need to apply for an IHT reference no?

If you look at IHT400 you will see that there are a lot of supplementary forms that can be filled in, exactly which ones depends on the assets held in the estate. To claim the RNRB you will need IHT435, for the jointly owned house 404, cash savings 406, chattels 407, listed stocks and shares 411.

That list covers the most likely that you will need, but there may be others. If you work your way through pages 5 & 6 on IHT400 it will hopefully become clearer as to exactly which supplements are required.

There are links to the supplentary forms (schedules) at the bottom of the page so you can download the ones that you require. Forms can be filled in from your PC and then printed off when completed.

I'm guessing that downloading forms and detailed information is a slightly alien process to you, but you will save yourself much time and hassle if you get your head round it. Also I'd recommend buying a small printer / scanner: you can submit the forms online but you will have to sign them first.

Do you have a friend or teenager who can help with this kind of thing.

Unfortunately it is not possible to submit the IHT400 & accompanying schedules online as these have to be posted together with any supporting documentation.

To be honest as the estate is so close to the £500k and you are filling in IHT forms anyway I would also do the transferred RNRB at the same time. This will give you a cushion should any extra asset be found later and/or make it unlikely any property value would be questioned.

In answer to your final question, you will not need an IHT reference number as you will not be paying any IHT

Sorry my mistake. However you can complete the forms online: you put the numbers in and the calculations are done for you and figures transferred to any other boxes they need to be in.

And downloading the forms is much faster than phoning up for them.
