SATA DVD Drive Compatibilty

Hello there, I am looking for a new DVD RW drive. I'm sure my old one is an IDE?? connection with the big ribbon connector. The new one I have seen has a SATA connection. My motherboard is only a year old and on the box it says SERIAL ATA 3GB, I take it this means I have the connections there for this drive? Is there anything else I need to be wary of before I buy? Thanks for any help.

  • I recently bought a new sata hard drive and I didnt realise it didnt come with cables so I would get some cables first also you may need to install drivers to enable the sata connection.
You can't con an honest man!
  • You should be ok as you have sataII I had trouble with my older MB which was the old SATA and was incompatible with the SATA II drives I bought even though they are supposed to be backward compatible.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • Thanks for the advice, I have got 2 SATA cables which came with the motherboard so I should be OK but the power cable is a 4 pin connector, where does that go on the motherboard?
  • deleted - since my info seems to be out of date, I thought they still used the 4 pin molex - but not so sure now

    So try this instead
    or one of these
  • Cheers Bob, I will get the side of the PC off and have a look.

Usually the normal power supply cable from psu fits into an adapter which fits into the sata drive, probably came with m/b as well.
  • Lots of drives have both types of power connectors on, I found that out after buying convertion cables.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • Well I have just fitted my new SATA DVD RW, I connected it to SATA no2 socket as it said in the instructions to use the secondary socket. It powers up, the door opens but it will not recognise any discs CD or DVD. Can anyone suggest anything please? When clicking on properties it says the device is working properly.

Perhaps you have to enable SATA in the BIOS?
Push Del or the appropriate key when turning on power.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Just tried it spud and it had 3 options, disable, raid, SATA and it was already selected as SATA.
