High income child benifit charge - deadline for self assessment

I am seeking advice regarding high income child benifit charge. I have only just started receiving child benefit this year, but I have never done a self assesment tax return before, my tax has always been handled by my employer via PAYE.
I was watching Martin Lewis last night who said that the self assesment tax return deadline is 31st January, so I started to panic.
I made a claim for child benefit in July 2022, when my daughter moved from her mums house to my house (I also stopped child maintenance as I am now the resident parent).
It took a long time for HMRC to process the claim and it wasnt until early January 2023 when I received a letter from HMRC stating the claim had been aprpoved and payments would be back dated from 5th Septemeber 2022.
I understand I have to pay tax on the child benefit as my income is over £50k, but I dont know when I have to do this. Then when I heard about this 31st January deadline I began to worry.
Does this deadline apply to my case, even though I only received the letter from HMRC ealier this month stating that the claim had been approved ?

The 31 January 2023 deadline is for people who have been asked to complete a tax return for 2021:22.
Have you been asked to complete one for 2021:22?
And if you only started to get Child Benefit in 2022:23 why do you think you might have to pay something back for 2021:22?

Thanks Dazed_and_C0nfused, this is what I was confused about. I didn't realise the 31 January 2023 deadline is for people who have been asked to complete a tax return for 2021:22.I haven't been asked to complete a tax return - will HMRC contact me to request that I complete a tax return for 2022:23 ?Presumably this means my deadline will be 31 January 2024, as I have only just started receiving child benefit this month ?

If HMRC contact you about HICBC then you have problems!
You should be contacting them to register for Self Assessment for 2022:23
Providing you do that before October then yes, you should be sent a notice to file a return by 31 January 2024. And pay anything owed by then as well.0
