    Hi

Several years ago we had a pegouet gt rcz auto - timinng chain often a problem on the mini/bm (same engine), timing chain and pump cost 900 and car was in 10am, and we picked up at 3pm-ish

There is no reason you should not get it back the same day - next day at the latest if there is something they did not note.

    Thanks
Hi, thats true to a degree but ive heard that some cars are more difficult than others when it comes to water pumps and timing chains. I think the 3 day rule is strong because i dont want people here seeing me as 'the inpatient city slicker'.
    Fair enough
Next time, for any other car repir service, ask them when they can fix and when they can have it back before you book. Often you will fid they will do same day for most repairs as they get parts in etc
    good luck
Yeah sure dude. They said its a days worth of work. The parts were ordered long ago and arrived last week. Ringing them at the end of  today? Too early do you think?

A good local garage, just like any other good local tradesman, may be booked up for weeks in advance.  If you have actually booked it in for the work to be done today, I would expect them either to have the parts arriving today or at least for the vehicle to be checked to confirm the problem.  On that basis I would agree that 3 days should be adequate.  If however they discover other issues it could drag on a bit.

Because you are paying them to do a service they said would take a day.

On the other hand you could just keep asking the internet what to do - but it won't help you get your car back :)
    Excellent post.
  • OP I know many won't believe it on here but there are lots of us who don't live inside the M25 and take a more relaxed approach to life in the countryside.

You just need to talk to the guy in a clear easy going manner and see what he says when you book it in and on the day you drop it off, then discuss if you have any problems with that, keep it friendly don't be demanding and you will soon figure out how the guy works.  If it is like many rural garages half the day will be be spent chatting with friends, customers delivery drivers etc

I don't see why asking the garage when they think it will be ready is either impatient or demanding? It's a perfectly normal enquiry. The more rural the area, presumably the more people depend on their cars, so a day or two should be enough.
Why is the price 'anything from £400-800'?. They presumably diagnosed the fault prior to you bringing it in and know what parts and work is needed, so why the vague pricing that varies by 100%?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You could give them a call on a pretense, something like "My wife/daughter/son has mislaid her/his house keys or something. Can you have a look in the glove box for me to see if they're there?"  This opens a dialogue in which they will probably tell you if/ when the car will be ready.

you take a car into a garage for a booked £400-800 job and are worried that you can't call at the end of the day and ask how it is doing without having to pretend someone has lost their keys ?

Remind me never to.move to the country !
