  • Ironing? I remember those days. Hardly ever use the iron now. If clothes aren't crumpled when you put them on, they generally are shortly after.

Hi, my fixed rate for my energy stops in February and my energy company has sent me an estimate for next year's cost. With an annual usage for gas being 8077 kwh and electric being 7188 kwh they have estimated gas costing £1,493.38 and electricity being £5,028.93 for the year. I was gobsmacked as my fixed rate DD was £250 per month. I used the energy calculator on this site and it came out at £3570 which I presume is for both. What can I do as there is no way I can afford to pay over £500 a month. Please help x
Those quotes appear to be the Gross rates before EPG and government support.      i.e. what you could be paying if the government wasnt capping it.     I am not on gas and dont know the unit prices but for electric, that usage would be about half that cost.

Your use is high, as mentioned.  However, not high that anything in particular stands out but perhaps a bit of energy laziness.      You are using around 19.7kWh per day.  8-12 kWh is more typical for non-heating electric.   However, it wouldn't take much to get to 20kWh. I know as that is what I using last year and got it half by making changes.

Its an outside chance - but any chance their new estimate is based on non EPG rates.

Is that a New Fix Offer - not EPG based SVT after Discount?

I read somewhere on here - at least some companies normally offer you current best fix to replace a fix and then standard rate.
So even the fix rates - for now  (unless govt U turns again) are then subject to deductions.
Guess any fixes right now might just be very expensive as well.

Have they included discounts in that new estimate ?

And just to thow in an another curveball. Could they have used headline fix / SVT tariff and not post discount charge rates.
Reason for Speculation (however it unlikely it seems in reality)
"I got my first post EPG bill from EOn Next about 8 days into Oct.  Having had my new rate notice late Sept - in line with what had sort of expected given EPG.  The annual amount on that first bill was c60% higher.
For that first bill - it's been corrected since - the annual use cost estimate was prior to the then 17p+VAT EPG tariff discount."
But that statement error - never made it into a revised DD amount demand.

The numbers are hopefully much higher - than some posting here expect after DF DD EPG rise in Apr - from £2500 to £3000 - and until Ofgem announce new Apr cap next month - unlikely suppliers can adjust prices on database anyway.

Putting your usage onto average EPG rates / discounts in price for EPG
    Electric
    Ave 34p+31.8+vat = c67.4p*7188 = 4844 + say 46p SC*365 = £5012.  Not so far away.
Gas, I make it more like
    Ave EPG 10.33p + 6.4p+VAT discount =  17.05p*8077 + 28p*365 = £1378. Still 10% away. So maybe not.

Put the discounted current EPG ave figure in with your usage I get - like you £2612 E+ 937 G = £3550 all in, inc Standing Charges and VAT.
So I see no reason to doubt your use of the site calculator.

    Q
Did they say what tariff they based their £5028 estimate on in the letter / email.

Double check your figures - then phone your supplier - with your regional rates based calcls if wanting EPG adjusted SVT for now - and ask them to accept those figures and a downward revised DD payment to boot - or ask them to explain exactly why not - their reasons.
You may want to allow say 20% on top - to reflect additional £500 on current £2500 EPG rates as well - as an initial guess.

All above assuming there is no significant debt or credit on the account - but you need to check recent statements.

Coming off a fix - it's a good time to review your usage
    - c8000 kWh is lower than Ofgem allow for cap and so govt allow for EPG (12000kWh) but
-c7200 kWh for electric - is more than double the 2900 kWh electric allowance.
    So hence £1000 more

No ironing here either. If clothes are ironed when you put them on, they generally aren't shortly after.

I've got some patio door curtains, have been washed AND ironed, and I can still see the packet creases. They've only been hanging up 5 years though......

Why are we talking about ironing - its really irrelevant to the OP's question unless he's providing an ironing service to his neighbourhood.

We are all electric, are at home all day and heat with electricity and still dont use as much as the OP suggests that he gets through, so the first thing to do is work out what is using it all.

If he's got gas centra heating and hot water then TBH even with electric showers, immersion heater, using a washer and dryer several times a day etc you'd be hard pushed to use over 7000kwh a year.

Are electric heaters in use somewhere or perhaps electric underfloor heating in a conservatory or bathroom etc. A bit of sleuthing is required to pin it down and reduce consumption

There are numerous reasons why people can have larger bills
Medical Kit in home  (dialysis, air beds in latter life etc)
Hobbies or Interests - like fish tanks and fish ponds

Some of these can run into 1000s kWh annually

    Not all can be cut.
